Crowds flock to Dalkeith Agricultural Society farm show

Despite the chilly weather and sporadic light showers, the crowd enjoyed a multitude of attractions at this year's Dalkeith Agricultural Society Show.

They included a craft fair, strawberry teas, a tombola, quad bikes, inflatable rides for the children, a wide range of trade exhibits, a vintage display of machinery and the Young Farmers' food and fun stand.

The Royal Highland Education Trust was also present and children's entertainer Peter Pepper was on hand to provide some laughs for the youngsters.

The novelty dog show proved as popular as ever, with a wealth of amusing competitions, including the 'Dog With the Waggiest Tail' and 'Greatest Similarity Between Dog and Owner' events.

The sight of youngsters getting zipped into inflatable sumo wrestling outfits for a bout of bouncy fun, brought a smile to many a face.

The sheep racing provided another fun element to the afternoon, while the Haddington Pipe Band served to lift the spirits of the crowd still further above the 'dreich' weather.

The Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue gave a demonstration.

Dalkeith Agricultural Society chairman Bill Gray said: "I've been absolutely delighted with the turnout of both the trade exhibitors and the livestock exhibitors for this year's show.

"Without their support we would not have a show at all.

"We have been very lucky with the weather – we have been delighted to have another super show."

The society's treasurer and secretary, Doreen and John Biggar enjoyed the hectic whirl of events.

Doreen said: "It went very well and there were no major problems.

"The turnouts were very good and the dog show went especially well.

"The rain stayed away more or less, which meant that people could enjoy being out in the open, watching the activities in the main ring."
