Midlothian Festival of Friendship is hailed a success
Midlothian recently hosted the 17th Festival of Friendship, the sporting and cultural extravaganza involving visiting groups from Germany and Hungary.
There were more than 80 guests from Hensberg and Komarom-Esztergom.
Events included an ice breaker ceilidh, a table tennis tournament, and a series of music, song and dance workshops which concluded with a gala concert at Newbattle Community High School.
There were also visits to places of interest including Rosslyn Chapel, the Scottish Mining Museum, the World Heritage Site at New Lanark, and a tour of Edinburgh.
Depute Provost Margot Russell emphasised the importance of sharing the common bond of music, dance, song and sport in bringing people from the partner areas closer together. She said: "It is very important that the links are developed.
"This applies especially to our young people, whether in sport, educational or cultural activity.
"Ties such as ours provide a firm basis on which to build for future generations."
President Pal Volner invited participation in the third Sports Festival in Komarom-Esztergom next year and Deputy Landat Willhelm Paffent thanked all who contributed to the success of the festival and said he looked forward to the next Festival of Friendship in Kreis Heinsberg in 2011.
