National awards for Loanhead musicians

Two of Loanhead Brass Roots' most talented players enjoyed success at the recent Scottish Brass Band Association's Solo Championships.

Rachel Brown (14) performed "Variations on a Welsh theme" by Peter Neale to take first place in the youth section - becoming Scottish Champion for the second year running.

Lloyd Griffin (14) gained a silver award in the intermediate section.

A pupil at Dalkeith High School, Rachel joined Loanhead Brass Roots three years ago and also joined the senior MacTaggart Loanhead Silver Band.

A year later, she gained membership of the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland and last summer toured Japan with NYBSS as part of its golden jubilee celebrations.

She is also a member of Midlothian Schools Brass Band and has been selected to play with the European Youth Brass Band in May in Belgium.

Lloyd started playing the cornet 10 years ago and joined Loanhead Brass Roots, the junior band of the MacTaggart Scott Loanhead Band, in its foundation year in 2002.
