Waste plan confusion

I note from some of the comments in relation to your article 'Millerhill waste plan meeting call up' (Advertiser, January 21) that there seems to be some confusion around the plans to create a new waste treatment facility for Edinburgh and Midlothian.

I have been fortunate to be involved in discussions on the Zero Waste partnership between Edinburgh and Midlothian for some months now and it has been clear at all stages that simply building a "large-scale incineration" plant as Mr Baxter suggests is not an option. I think it is important that this fact be highlighted.

Any solution that comes forward is far more likely to include a mix of technologies which will help achieve Government targets on recycling, and in the process remove the potential for penalties to be incurred by both councils.

As mentioned, I have been involved in a group discussing a number of options as from the outset of this project both councils' administrations felt that this was something that each political group within the council should be involved in.

In Midlothian all groups have taken up this offer, however in Edinburgh the Green councillors have not yet attended any of the recent cross-party, cross-council meetings.

Perhaps if Mr Baxter were to have a word with his colleagues in Edinburgh some of the confusion could be avoided?

At this point both councils have still to approve the tender process after which we will see more detail emerging on what form the final solution will take.

It goes without saying that doing nothing is not an option, so taking account of the views of residents through the various consultation events it is hoped a solution can be found which will help us contribute our part towards Scotland's world leading climate change targets.

Group Leader, Midlothian Council SNP
