Thursday, February 12

Ray Smith, the assistant leader of the Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team, will be the guest speaker when Penicuik and District Probus Club meets in Penicuik Town Hall's Lesser Hall at 2pm.

Saturday, February 14

St John's and King's Park Sunday Club is holding a St Valentine's Day coffee morning in the church hall from 10am to 11.30am. The coffee morning on February 21 is cancelled.

Middleton Village Hall is hosting an evening of classic, retro and indie music, featuring Blackstar. Doors open at 7.30pm with the band playing from 9pm to midnight. Tickets from Lindsay Wilson on 07906 149085.

The Howgate community is celebrating Valentine's Day with a disco in the village hall from 7.30pm. The dress code is red and black. Tickets can be obtained on 01968 678119.

The stirring sound of Skyhook will be heard at Penicuik Arts Centre, West Street, Penicuik, at 7.30pm. The trio – Martin Harwood, Cath James and Eoin Teather – will perform traditional tunes and songs from Scotland, Ireland and Cape Breton Island. Tickets can be bought from Penicuik Town Hall Open House on Saturday from 10am to 4pm or at the door.

Sunday, February 15

The cagefighting British Middleweight Champion, James Mair takes on the internationally-successful Paul Jenkins at the Dalkeith Miners' Welfare Club. Other fights begin from 1.30pm with James's fight scheduled for 5.30pm.

Midlothian Walkers will undertake a 15km B walk (moderate to strenuous) to Dawyk Mill - Altarstone - Dreva Wood - Tahenna Hill. Return Dreva Muirburn - dismantled railway to start. Monday, February 16

A new four-day diving course starts at Beeslack Community High School, Penicuik. Flip n Fun is a great way for children to learn the basics of diving on land and in the pool. The class finishes on Thursday, February 19.

The Gospel Hall in Mayfield is holding a children's holiday club until Friday, February 20 from 10am to 12 noon. Activities on offer include bible stories, singing, quizzes, crafts and prizes. All children welcome. Parents' day is held on Friday morning. Visiting speaker will be Robert Plant of Harrogate. For further information telephone 01875 820802.

Loanhead Parish Church Guild meets in the church hall at 7.15pm. The guest speaker will be John Young from the Scottish Bible Society. All welcome.

Dalkeith Arts Music and Events, formerly The Dalkeith Arts Guild, will be organising an event by the Tyne and Esk Writers' group at which members will present their own work. Described as 'an evening of laughs and entertainment' the event will begin at 7.30pm. Members tickets will cost 2 and non-members, 3, at the door.

Wednesday, February 18

Members of Penicuik Gardening Club will be hoping to rise to the challenge when they take on the West Linton Horticultural Society in a quiz on Wednesday February 18. The event will take place in West Linton.

"Growing and showing vegetables" will be the talk given by Mr Williams of Pathhead at the next meeting of Gorebridge Horticultural Society, which takes place in Gorebridge Parish Church Hall at 7.30pm on Wednesday, February 18.

Penicuik South Church's women's group meet in the West Street Hall, Penicuik, at 2.30pm. The guest speaker will be Olivia Begbie, who will give a talk on "Old Edinburgh".
