Where are Starlings?

A question for Mr George Hogg, Wildlife Management.

Where have all the Starlings gone? Since the end of last year I had not seen any starlings until May 3 when two landed in my garden.

Normally when I put bird food out there is usually a flock landing on my shed roof within minutes. This year nil, but for the two on May 3.

Has this been caused by severe winter weather or by some other cause?

Mr G Wright

John Street, Penicuik

Editor's note: We asked George Hogg for his views on this subject and he consulted with ornithologist, Stephen Welch of Longniddry. Mr Welch felt it was unlikely that the hard weather was to blame - having searched the various national bird census data, none of which reported a sudden Starling decline. He felt it was far more likely they had found some alternative attraction in the same neighbourhood, or that a predator (for example a Sparrow Hawk or cat) had put them off.
