Youth opportunities
In response to a comment from Alex Hutchison (Advertiser, January 21, p9), when he stated "Right now there's nothing for the youth and we definitely need to get them off the street".
There is a youth facility being run in the back room of 58 Main Street, Gorebridge, (the offices of Gorebridge Community Development Trust) by Gorebridge Opportunities.
GO is an organisation set up a number of years ago to provide a facility for young people aged 11-18 years old in Gorebridge. We are unfortunately only open two evenings a week due to the lack of funds and volunteers.
Due to the size of the room we are only able to accommodate 15 young people at any one time. Recently we have been averaging these numbers on a Tuesday and a Thursday.
The young people enjoy using computers, playing the Wii and X-Box, table football, and various board games.
Various events and trips have been organised during the time GO has been in operation, including discos, music events, bowling, cinema trips, paintballing and sponsored walks.
We are in the fortunate position to have had a student in placement with us for a few weeks (which, unfortunately for us, ends early May) – Ross Watters is the youth worker with Gorebridge Parish Church and has been working closely with the young people attending Gorebridge Opportunities.
In his church capacity Ross is also responsible for Youth Work on a Sunday morning 10.45am-1pm during morning worship, as well as running a youth group on a Friday night 7-9pm.
With added funds and volunteers Gorebridge Opportunities would be able to do a lot more for the young people in the village. If you are interested in helping or would like to know more please click here
