1963

MAYFIELD: Mayfield Primary and St Luke’s RC Schools, clinic and library will be officially opened by Mr J G Methven, Convener of Midlothian County Council on Monday. The schools, with clinic and library, are believed to be unique in the United Kingdom.

1988

BILSTON: A third of the total workforce from Bilston Glen and Monktonhall Collieries will have to go to save the pits from closure, the mining unions were told this week. At a meeting on Monday British Coal said it must know by Friday if 400-450 redundancies can be made. If not, the pits will close.

1998

DALKEITH: The Scottish Office decision to knock back plans for a new educational campus in Dalkeith is causing parent groups and local authority officials to have a re-think on the future of Dalkeith High School.
