MIDLOTHIAN: “Too many of our people have to leave the county every day to find work,” delegates from Midlothian trade unions were told on Sunday.

1989

NEWBATTLE: Closure-threatened Newbattle Abbey College was granted a reprieve last week when the governors voted to keep it open until the end of September. A final decision will now be taken on September 6.

1999

ROSLIN: Midlothian’s top scientist Professor Ian Wilmut was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s birthday honours. Prof Wilmut, who led the team of scientists at Roslin Institute to create Dolly, the cloned sheep, said he was “excited, honoured and flattered” by the award.
