1966

PENICUIK: The Penicuik building firm of James Tait & Co has been given the job to reconstruct Penicuik Town Council’s houses at 78/96 John Street, known locally as Tait’s Buildings. The estimated cost is £36,000. The Penicuik firm’s estimate was slightly higher than the other tenders but still won the contact.

1991

NEWTONGRANGE: Newtongrange musician John McGuff has started the year on a high note, winning a prestigious award in a national big band competition. John, a freelance trombonist, was a member of the Bob Peters band which finished third overall in BBC Radio Two’s big band contest.

2006

MIDLOTHIAN: Midlothian’s first civil partnership will take place in May. The all-male ceremony is the first of four to have been registered in the county since civil partnerships became law last month. The number of religious wedding ceremonies in the Dalkeith area has fallen by almost 100 in a year.
