1966

MAYFIELD: Benjamin Holgate (24) joined the Scottish National Orchestra this week as a violinist. His parents live in Rowantree Road, Mayfield. When he left school, Benjamin was employed with the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society. He left the firm to make a career on the concert platform.

1991

NEWTONGRANGE: Willie Yuill, manager of the Dean Tavern, Newtongrange, has been made a fellow of the British Institute of Innkeeping. A former president of the Scottish Licensed Trade Association, Willie is one of only three people to be awarded the fellowship this year.

2006

MIDLOTHIAN: The new smoking ban has been cautiously welcomed in Midlothian. Publicans were reporting few problems with patrons willing to abide by the new legislation.
