The suspension of runway operations last night resulted in several inbound flights being diverted, including flights from Amsterdam, Tenerife and Sofia, to Glasgow Airport.

Reports say that a BA flight reached the Scottish Borders then turned around and flew back to Heathrow.

Flights look to be arriving safely this morning with very few delays being reported.

The diversions came after a yellow ice warning was put in place by the Met Office across much of the North East, including Edinburgh, until 11am this morning, Monday, January 4.

A spokesperson for Edinburgh Airport told the Mail Online: “Due to freezing temperatures and constant rain/hail fall our runway has frozen over.

"We've had to suspend our runway operations for the remainder of tonight while we work to make it safe for arriving and departing aircraft in the first wave tomorrow.
