Dalkeith is set to lose its community centre after a decision to demolish it was made behind closed doors by Midlothian Council.
It emerged this week that the decision was taken in private at a full council meeting in September.

Members agreed to demolish the Woodburn Road building because of the spiralling cost of upgrading the facility.

News of the closure comes just a
week after the revelation of another controversial decision taken privately by the council – to demolish Loanhead Town Hall. (Read the story here)

Council leader Derek Milligan (Lab) said the authority planned to invest in a new extension to the former Thornybank Nursery, which could be used by users of the Dalkeith centre.

Facilities at the newly-opened Woodburn Primary School and Dalkeith Community Campus would also be available, he added. He insisted users had been consulted over the plans.

But users of the centre say they were not consulted and are furious over the council's handling of the situation.

Once again Dalkeith is set to use yet another facility. Also, is Midlothian Council geographically challenged? Has Dalkeith moved out to Cousland Road? Are the stories of town centre regeneration a myth? The supposed facilities at Thornybank and the disgrace of a Campus are not used by the community for a number of reasons, the primary ones being access and location.

Many years ago, the Council took the liberty of selling the Dalkeith Corn Exchange (which actually belonged to the people of Dalketih). This ancient and historic building is now up for sale although it is in an advanced state of disrepair. The Council should look at their track record in serving the people of Dalkeith and redress the imbalance by purchasing the Corn Exchange back. However, this will never happen.

By the way, rumours are rife that the Dalkeith Arts Centre is also in danger of closing ........ Dalkeith, now where is that now????

Like the rest of Dalkeith the area is now looking very 60's....drab and very scruffy. I suppose the Community Centre could be saved but do the council even care.
All the money spent on new street lighting and Dalkeiths eyesore traffic lights ( maybe they will double up as this years Christmas lights to save cash !!!)is totally wasted.....time to oust the Cooncil !
