THE lack of banking facilities in Mayfield has angered customers, with the community's only cashline often out of order for days at a time.
Mayfield and Easthouses Community Council contacted the Royal Bank of Scotland expressing dismay that the RBS cashline at Scotmid is often out of order, forcing customers to travel to Newtongrange to use facilities there.

In addition, the communit
y council asked if the bank would consider installing another machine next to the existing one, and even re-establishing a branch.

Serviced

A letter from the RBS Customer Relations Unit said the bank was sorry to hear about the problems surrounding the cashline, but that it would ensure the machine would be properly serviced and maintained, hopefully preventing any further problems in the future.

But vice-chairman Michael Hogg said the other queries the community council had asked had not been answered and added: "We need to write back to the bank and ask for a guarantee that this will be looked at."

Installation

Referring to the installation of extra facilities, Mayfield Councillor Lisa Beattie said: "In light of the development of the area it would be responsible for them to do so.

"I would have thought the least they could have done was answer the letter properly."

If the RBS isn't interested why don't the community council approach other banks or better still look into starting a community bank. Surely there's some locals and local businessmen who would be interested in investing in this type of venture. This has been done in other places where banks were giving local a raw deal.
