Help from the local community is being sought as work begins on the second phase of the restoration of the Penicuik War Memorial.
Project Penicuik, the local civic trust, wants to add names of servicemen and women who have died since World War II.

Research by Margaret Coull and Sheila Findlay has thrown up the names of three men, born in Penicuik, who have died since 1945.

But organisers are keen to ensure that no-one is missed out when the war memorial, in the public park, is updated.

The fallen include Pte Peter Ketchen, a Royal Scot, who was killed by terrorist action in Cyprus in 1955 and REME Sgt Charles Young, who died in Malaya in 1958.

The most recent casualty is Sgt Jonathan Mathews, of The Highlanders, who was killed while on foot patrol in Afghanistan in July. His funeral service was held at Sacred Heart Church, Penicuik.

The £4,000 conservation work, carried out by staff from Loanhead-based AOC Archaeology, was funded by the War Memorials Trust and Midlothian Council.

If you can help Project Penicuik with the next phase of the memorial's restoration, contact Ms Coull on margcoul@hotmail.co.uk
