PEOPLE with disabilities should now find it easier to access Newbattle Abbey College thanks to the installation of a lift.
The 'A' listed building, which dates back to the 16th century, is now fully accessible and compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act (1995), having undergone a £350,000 refurbishment, including the installation of the state-of-the-art lift, ex
ternal ramps, handrails, new toilet facilities and the conversion of four en-suite bedrooms in the college's residential wing.

Marlene Gill, member of Midlothian disability group, ForwardMid, said: "I have had connections with Newbattle Abbey College for a number of years on both a professional and personal basis.

Accessible

"As a wheelchair user, I am delighted that my contact with the college can be maintained and that the college is accessible to all members of the community."

College Principal Ann Southwood, said: "This refurbishment has been planned for a while. It took time to obtain permission from Historic Scotland and Midlothian Council and we ran into some initial difficulties attempting to install a lift in such an old building.

"we are delighted to finally announce that the college is now DDA compliant and our facilities are accessible to all."
