Central and local government funding has paid for more than 30 police officers in Mid and East Lothian.
Midlothian's most senior police officer, Chief Superintendent Terry Powell, revealed that since 2007, he had been able to recruit an additional 69 officers to the division from his own budget.
CS Powell was addressing Midlothian Council on the eve of his retiral from Lothian and Borders Police.
He will be replaced by CS Mark Williams, who takes up his new post – based at Dalkeith Police Station – on Monday February 8.
There were budgetary problems and recruitment difficulties when CS Powell took over E Division three years ago.
"My priority was to recruit as many officers as I could possibly do from the bad days of 2007 when we had a severe shortage.
"Since 2007, we will have recruited 103 officers by the end of March this year, of which 69 are from my general budget, and we have 34 officers that the local authority and government has provided," he added.
