POLICE have launched an investigation after a number of vehicles were discovered ablaze at the Midlothian Cleansing and Transport Depot in Gorebridge.
The emergency services were alerted to the Stobhill Road Depot at about 1am on Tuesday morning, where a Ford Transit van was on fire.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue used two high pressure hose reels and two breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire, which had spread to two other vehicles.

Damaged

Another nine vehicles were also damaged in the yard, mainly by having the windows broken, and attempts had been made to steal vehicles.

Police are anxious to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have seen anything suspicious, or to anyone who may have information regarding those crimes.

Tragic consequences

Community Inspector John McGill said: "This was a senseless and reckless attack which could have resulted in tragic consequences.

"Those crimes have resulted in damage being caused in excess of £30,000."

Officers from the Crime Reduction Unit based at Dalkeith Police Station are making enquires.

Anyone with information is asked to call Dalkeith Police Station on 0131 663 2855.
