A group offering support to childminders has started up in the Loanhead area.
Established by Loanhead Community Learning Centre and the Scottish Childminding Association, the group meets in the centre on Tuesdays from 9.30am to 11am.

Sandra Ramsay, a childminder from Paradykes Avenue, Loanhead, said while children socialis
e and play at the learning centre, the group members can talk about issues and help each other.

Really great

"The Care Commission changed the way every childminder works and we thought it was far more supportive for people to work together to discuss all these new laws.

"We can support each other through it all.

"The reaction has been really good.

"It is really great because the childminders don't feel they are out there on their own."

Since forming just over a month ago, the group has seen its membership increase from two to six but Sandra added that the doors are open to all childminders in the town and surrounding area.

Isolated business

It is the first of its kind in Loanhead.

Bernie Scotland, the association's childminding development officer in Midlothian, has given her support to the venture, one of six operating in Midlothian.

She said: "Childminding can and often is an isolated business.

"The childminders who attend these groups meet regularly, can and do support each other and it allows them and their charges to socialise and interact with others, share information, advice, experiences and practices.

"There is a varied range of childminders who attend these groups ranging from experienced to newly registered childminders."
