A hearing into the alleged misconduct of two Midlothian councillors will take place on October 8.
A complaint had been made to the Standards Commission for Scotland against Labour councillors Alex Bennett and Jackie Aitchison claiming they had contravened the Councillors' Code of Conduct by failing to declare interests.

The exact nature of th
e breach will remain confidential until the public hearing, which will take place at Melville Castle Hotel, Lasswade, from 9.30am.

One day has been set aside for the hearing but it is understood it could carry on to a second day.

The complaint will be considered by a panel, chaired by commission convenor Mrs Wendy Goldstraw.

She will be joined by members Peter Donaldson and Okain McLennan.

A Standards Commission spokesman told the Advertiser that at the conclusion of the hearing the panel will be asked to make two decisions.

The first is if a breach has occurred. If the panel decides there has been no breach of conduct, that will be the end of the matter.

If the panel concludes there has been a breach, it will take an immediate decision on what sanctions should be applied.

The panel has the power to censure an individual, suspend them from their position for up to one year, or disqualify them for up to five years.
