Plans to build the long-awaited Midlothian community hospital have been approved.
Members of the planning committee have approved an application for NHS Lothian to build a modern, two-storey hospital on land to the south of Eskbank Road, Bonnyrigg.

The proposed facility will consist of 40 beds for the care of frail elderly patients, 48 beds for the care of elderly people with mental ill health, and outpatient and diagnostic services.

Early spring

The development will require around 100 staff.

Midlothian's out-of-hours service, which currently operates from the former Bonnyrigg Health Centre, would move to the new premises, which is expected to open in early spring 2010.
