Penicuik is hit
by earthquake

THE earth moved for a number of Penicuik residents on Sunday afternoon.
Householders in the Cornbank area heard a loud bang and doors rattle as a small earthquake hit the town.
The British Geological Survey reported that the 4pm quake had a magnitude of 2.3. Its epicentre was Penicuik and emanated 4.7km below ground.
Community policeman PC Derek Frizzell told Penicuik and District Community Council on Monday evening police had received calls from residents concerned about the sound of loud explosions in Cornbank.
“It turns out it was nothing criminal. It was tectonic activity,” he said.
“We made inquiries at the British Geological Survey who confirmed that there had been a couple of minor earthquakes in Penicuik. It is natural tectonic activity and nothing to do with mine workings nearby.
Community council secretary Mike Jackson said he heard a banging noise and the door rattle.
Another minor earthquake hit Penicuik on Friday, November 30.
With a magnitude measuring 2.3, this quake took place at 5.10pm and started 4.7km underground.
