A Penicuik pensioner is so keen for Scotland to be rid of grey squirrels, he is prepared to face prosecution in his own private cull.
Fred Wood (83) has been inspired by the actions of his neighbour Hamish Jack, who featured in the Midlothian Advertiser recently claiming to have shot and drowned more than 200 of the creatures in recent years.

The Scottish SPCA issued a warning t
hat trapping and killing squirrels inhumanely could lead to legal action.

But Mr Wood, a former Penicuik and District Community councillor told the Advertiser: "I would be perfectly happy to be prosecuted."

Now he wants to open a debate about the "American tree rat" which, he believes, once removed, would allow the return of the red squirrel, last seen locally in the 1960s.

A resident of Penicuik for 35 years, Mr Wood has purchased a purpose-built trap to catch squirrels in his garden.

Mr Wood, who is partially sighted, favours drowning – by submerging the trap in a water-filled wheelie bin – as the fastest way of killing the squirrels.

He said the issue was "debated in parliament by lily-livered people".

Full story in this week's Midlothian Advertisers – on sale now

Rats with bushy tails........time to cull them big time. They destroy bird feeders and are nothing short of vermin.
Help reinstate the red squirrel..........BBQ a grey to day !!!

Well, what is the humane way of killing grey squirrels? The official cull in the Borders is shooting them - but the Police removed the air gun of one person from Penicuik who was doing that. Now another pensioner may be prosecuted for drowning them. Is the TV chef's method of getting them into a bag and hitting them over the head acceptable?

Humane dispatch?

What is Humane? “Humane” and “humane as possible” are words frequently used by conservationists to describe the killing of wildlife. So what exactly do these words mean or are they merely euphemistic references to brutality?

Conservationists are currently engaged in what they call the “humane dispatch” of grey squirrels by clubbing them over the head with a blunt instrument, yet if the same happened to one of our own population it would be described as a brutal murder.

Putting aside the argument of whether a human life is of greater value than that of a squirrel, it is logical to say that if the method of dispatch is exactly the same there is no excuse for describing it differently.

Perhaps the idea of the ”brutal dispatch“ of wildlife and “humane murder” of humans is too much for the human animal to contemplate.
