The distraught owner of a cat found riddled with airgun pellets on a Howgate road has described those responsible as "not human".
Shy 21-month-old tom Willow is lucky to be alive after – for the first time – he wandered out of the safety of his garden at Newtoft Street, Gilmerton, where he had been playing with brother Inigo.

He was discovered in agony on Wednesday, June 17,
more than a week after he went missing, on the grass verge of a road near Mount Lothian Farm.

Willow's injuries were so severe, the person who found him told the Scottish SPCA they thought he had been in a road accident.

The traumatised tabby was rushed to the Lamond Veterinary Clinic in Livingston, where x-rays revealed he had been shot 11 times at close range.

Pellets were lodged in his face, chest and legs – and it is believed he must have been pinned or tied down to stop him escaping the attack.

It is thought Willow, now beginning a lengthy recuperation at home, may have been taken to Howgate, near Penicuik, by car.

Scottish SPCA Inspector Heather Lawson said: "We have not yet received any information that will assist us in our investigation of this cruel airgun attack on a defenceless cat. We are urging anyone with information to contact our animal helpline now on 03000 999 999.

This is a terrible act of cruelty. Amazing to think people old enough to drive could be so intentionally cruel.

I think most people have heard the theory that anyone who can be intentionally cruel to an animal is only one step away from doing the same to a child. I really hope these people are caught quickly and are punished appropriately - my personal feeling is that an appropriate punishment would be to do the same thing to them as they did to that helpless animal, but since that is obviously not practical, I think a prison sentence is in order.

I'd have the Adverter run a competition, with the lucky winners being handed airguns and, cheered on by a baying mob, encouraged to shoot the culprits (who'd be in stocks and chains) in the nether regions.

The people who did this are utter scum. They should be named and shamed.

I agree with #4 above. Once named and shamed then the community can deal with them as the law will do nothing other than a slap on the wrist. I bet they feel like real hard men, well your not your just a bunch of wimps who can only pick on a defenceless animal, rodents !!!

The people concerned should be named & shamed & dealt with by a custodial sentence, a more heartless act is difficult to think off, even a person with Ailurophobia (fear of cats)must feel compassion for poor Willow. There have been a few cats including Katie from Main Street going missing & the thought of what might happen to them is too dreadful to think off.

Surely someone must have some information regarding this? Please speak up so justice can be done for Willow. And yes they should be named and shamed! It's utterly disgusting that a defenceless animal should be subjected to this level of crulety. I hear there are a lot of people in that area who have racing pigeons. Maybe they might have some answers..... My mums cat was killed years ago by a man who kept pigeons (he had hit her over the head with a spade) he took her up to the side of the road at Vogrie and made it look like she had been hit by a car! These people are disgusting and should be punished!
