Safety measures have been ordered at a derelict Newtongrange building used as a drinking den.
An application to build 60 flats and four small commercial units at the Newbattle Road site – previously owned by D Moffat and Sons – was set to be approved by Midlothian Council's planning committee, subject to conditions and legal agreements.

But the redevelopment, which would also see the relocation of Newtongrange Star's existing football pitch, appears to have stalled since it was considered in April last year.

The issue was discussed at a recent meeting of Newtongrange Community Council.

Village councillor Wilma Chalmers (Lab) said a dangerous building notice had been issued to the owner and measures were to be taken to improve safety and keep out youths.

The site owner would still like to see it developed, Councillor Chalmers added.

Developer SJ (Edinburgh) Ltd was not available for comment, despite repeated attempts by The Advertiser.
