The Humans by Matt Haig

When a celebrated Cambridge academic proves a mathematical theory, aliens in a far-off galaxy realise humans have finally made the link that would allow them to develop interstellar travel.

To avert this happening, they kill Dr Andrew Martin and replace him with an unwilling agent of their own, tasked with eliminating any evidence of the breakthrough - including anyone who knows about it.

While there are few surprises in the plot of this book, it is full of dark humour and dry one-liner s, and (former broadsheet journalist) Haig’s style makes it an enjoyable read.
