Album of the Week

English singer-songwriter Dido, best known when Eminem sampled her hit Thank You on Stan, has not exactly had the most prolific work rate, with this only her fourth album in the space of 14 years, but colossal sales for her debut No Angel and its follow-up, Life For Rent, appear to allow her free rein with her record label, Sony.

This time, she has returned to the bleeping and whooshing electronica of her early days and many of the elements which made that so appealing have remained – the breathy, almost spoken, girl-next-door appeal of her voice; the gossamer melodies; and the earnest lyrics about love.

Lead single No Freedom is the most organic track with its plaintive acoustic strum, but there is more bounce musically in End Of Night and Blackbird, both of which explore the need for liberation, which also infused one of her finest songs, Hunter.
