Questions have been raised over why the company that successfully delivered the new Lasswade High School cannot re-build Newbattle’s.
Mayfield and Easthouses Community Council Chairman Robert Hogg is angry that BAM construction will not be involved in the £34m replacement Newbattle Community High School.
The firm recently completed the nearby Lasswade Community High School under budget and on time.
As the Scottish Government is paying around £17m towards the Newbattle project, there are certain conditions attached.
One is that contractors are appointed through a ‘hub’.
Mr Hogg said: “It’s like the Scottish Government just decide who gets it and I don’t think that is fair in this day and age, when everything is supposed to be transparent. It smells rotten.”
Midlothian Council said: “The council has received funding from the Scottish Government for Newbattle and as such contractors are procured through hub East Central Scotland Limited (hubco).”
The Scottish Government said that Midlothian Council procured a ‘hub development partner’ in 2010.
The Space consortium were the successful bidders, but no one was precluded from bidding, according to the government.
