Some of the leading lights of entertainment in Midlothian are delighted at plans to bring a top-class arts centre and theatre to the area.

Tom Bancroft, of the renowned Pathhead Music Collective, believes a theatre is needed in Midlothian: “I think it would be great and the area needs something like that, so I would support it as an idea.

“We have been talking about getting more people to come to Pathhead for events, but you need the venues for local people to go to and to also encourage people to come here; artists and visitors.”

Newtongrange-born comedian Eric Davidson is happy at the news, as long as no other local facilities are sacrificed for it.

He said: “I think it’s fantastic. Anything that’s to do with the arts can only be positive. It’s great to hear that there could be a proper theatre for Midlothian in Newtongrange.

“If this arts centre is an addition to local facilities and not replacing them then I’m more than happy.”
