Beattie breaks her silence on resigning as Leader of Midlothian Council

Lisa Beattie has spoken to the Advertiser for the first time since resigning as council leader.

Councillor Beattie (SNP) hit the headlines in July when she left office after just five weeks in charge.

In a statement at the time, she said: “As planned, I am stepping back to focus on my passion which is education and communities.”

Amid claims that she had been “sacked” by party colleagues, and under increasing pressure from the opposition Labour Group to “disclose” her reasons for standing down, Counillor Beattie, who is married to Midlothian SNP MSP Colin Beattie, has until now stuck to that version of events.

But speaking to the Advertiser in a recent interview she hinted, albeit rather cryptically, that there had indeed been more to the story.

She said: “The implication is that something dodgy had gone on. Any blind man at 10 paces could see what happened – it wouldn’t have taken a great seer to figure things out.
