Police are appealing for witnesses after an attempt was made to start a fire at the Scottish Ambulance Service depot in Mayfield.

A returning ambulance crew raised the alarm at 10.45pm on Thursday, November 17, after smelling burning. Firefighters from Dalkeith and Musselburgh attended at the depot at Mayfield Industrial Estate.

Sergeant Scott Meechan, based at Dalkeith Police Station, told the Advertiser the incident was “reckless and potentially very dangerous”. Firefighters discovered a “fist-sized piece of ash” to the rear of the station garage doors.

“It looks as if someone crumpled up some paper to the rear door of the garage. There was no damage to the property or the door,” he addded.

An extensive search of the area was carried out by police officers who attended.

Police are urging witnesses who may have seen someone out and about that night setting fires in the area or individuals aware of a family member returing home smelling of smoke to contact them as soon as possible.
