The council’s decision to grant planning permission for 56 homes at Broomieknowe Golf Club has secured the future of the 111-year-old club.

Despite council officers recommending that the application be refused, councillors accepted it by 15 votes to two.

Cala Homes will now build the two-storey properties on the golf club’s practice ground.

Robert Beattie, club secretary at Broomieknowe Golf Club said: “After many years of working closely with Cala Homes, the club is delighted by Midlothian Council’s decision to grant planning permission for the residential development of our practice ground.

“The sale of the land to Cala will underpin the financial future of Broomieknowe and enable us to carry out much needed improvements to the clubhouse facilities as well as enhancing the golf course.”

Cala will build 42 houses for private sale and 14 affordable housing units at the site.

A new access road for the homes will be created directly opposite Midlothian Community Hospital.
