Great Britain’s Great War by Jeremy Paxman

Jeremy Paxman, better known for presenting Newsnight, presents forgotten wisdom about the First World War and delivers a balanced and intelligent analysis – not just of the Western Front, the usual focus of books on the war, but of the British at home as well.

Rationing, support for the war, and other facets of the conflict are brought out in this engaging and – with the centenary of the outbreak of the war in 1914 fast approaching – timely book.

Paxman’s take is particularly interesting on the outbreak, when he asks, and answers, the question: in the light of what it meant to be British 100 years ago, was this war really inevitable?
