Hot on the heels of announcing the launch of their beer in cask in July, Cross Borders Brewing Company has again shown its desire to do something a little bit differently by launching its beer in cans!

Eskbank-based Cross Borders was keen to get its products to a wider market but didn’t want to go down the well-trodden bottle route.

Director Gary Munckton explained why: “Packaging our beer in cans as opposed to glass bottles appealed for a number of reasons.

“Cans are lighter, so save money and help the environment in distribution. Aluminium cans are the world’s most recycled product and it’s far easier and cheaper to recycle cans than glass bottles.

“We were also able to have a mobile canning company come to us rather than send our beer off site as so many small producers have to do.

“This appealed as we could ensure we had absolute control over product quality at every stage of the process.”

Initially the Cross Borders products available in cans will be the Pale and the IPA.

Head brewer Jonathan Wilson said: “Our beers are can conditioned, so they naturally carbonate in the can.

“We feel this ensures the freshest possible beer and ensures the best possible taste.

“All our canned beers are unfined, unfiltered and unpasteurised and are suitable for vegetarians.”

Cross Borders Brewing Company celebrated the official launch night of its cans at craft beer and curry bar, V DEEP on Henderson Street, Leith last Friday evening.

Jonathan was delighted with the launch night.

He said: “Hosting the can launch at V DEEP was an obvious choice for us. It has such a great reputation for craft beer and championing local producers.

“Maxine, Spencer and the whole team at V DEEP are so dedicated to serving the best quality craft beer and fabulous food, and we had a hugely successful night celebrating with them and their customers!”
