Midlothian has the second highest level of youth unemployment in Scotland.
Figures released by the GMB trade union show that 31.9 per cent of all unemployment claimants in the county are aged between 18 and 24.
The Orkney Islands has the highest proportion in Scotland with 33.3 per cent while East Lothian is in third place with 31.4 per cent. Edinburgh is in 29th place with 25.1 per cent.
Bernard Harkins, Labour’s candidate for Midlothian North and Musselburgh at the Scottish Parliament elections, said: “The best investment that any government can make is in the future of our young people. These figures are very worrying and show that young people are major victims of this recession.”
A Scottish Government spokesman said the number of Midlothian school leavers going on to further and higher education, training and employment had increased in the last few years.
