Gorebridge supermarket plan to be scaled down

PLANS for a supermarket which would have provided 200 jobs in Gorebridge are being scaled back.

Developers insist the supermarket at the dilapidated Arniston Rangers ground on Hunterfield Road will go ahead, but say it is likely to be smaller than anticipated, with fewer jobs as a result.

Property development and investment firm Macdonald Estates updated Gorebridge Community Council on the long-awaited project at a recent meeting.

Planning permission was granted in 2009 for a 45,000 square foot class-one superstore on the site of Arniston Rangers’ football ground at Newbyres Park.

It was hoped such a store would create 200 full and part-time jobs in the town, but development manager Niall McLean said it was now unlikely plans for a supermarket as large as that originally proposed would be brought forward, and that the number of jobs would correlate to the size of the shop.

But Mr McLean added that the planning permission left scope to also include other smaller shops on the site, and that there had been interest from retailers.
