Police are appealing for witnesses to an attempted theft near an ATM machine on Bonnyrigg High Street last week.
The intended 16-year-old victim had withdrawn cash at around 3.20pm on Tuesday, June 26, when he was approached by a man who tried to snatch money from his hand.
The suspect then made off down the High Street. He is described as white, 6ft 2ins tall, bald, with tattoos on his neck, and wearing a tracksuit.
A police spokesman said: “Thankfully, the suspect was unsuccessful in his attempt to rob the intended victim, who was not injured in the encounter.
“We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident, or who noticed the suspect in Bonnyrigg High Street, to contact us.
“At this time, we would advise anyone withdrawing cash from a bank machine to be wary of anyone acting suspiciously in the area, and avoid using the machine if they think they may be targeted.
“Likewise, people should take steps to shield their PIN, and avoid being distracted if anyone approaches them while they are using a bank machine. In addition, we would advise that people discreetly put their money and card away before leaving the machine.”
