Huge crowds turned out to celebrate the centenary of the Newtongrange Children’s Gala on Saturday, and even the sun shone all day.
Five years of planning had gone into the centenary celebrations, with a week of events taking place to mark the milestone, culminating with the gala day itself on Saturday.
Newtongrange Gala Day chairman John Turnbull was delighted with how it went.
He said: “It was absolutely fantastic, not a hitch all day long.
“And obviously the weather was out of this world. You couldn’t have bought weather like that.
“We reckon there was over 10,000 people on site. Every spot that was available in the park was taken.
“And the parade was unbelievable this year, it was a lot bigger than normal. Along the whole route it was mobbed on both sides of the road, three or four deep. It’s definitely the busiest I have seen it. We have had a lot of positive comments, everyone is saying that it was unique year. A lot of them are saying we did the village proud.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better centenary celebration.
“It will be talked about for many years.”
