A former pub closed to the public for two years is to be re-opened as a restaurant and take away after councillors removed a condition.

The former Abbey Granary pub on Newbattle Road, Newtongrange, had already been given approval to make the change, but a condition was added to forbid takeaways, which was removed at the last Local Review Body meeting.

Cllr Russell Imrie (Lab)said: “It’s a beautiful looking building, the reality is if we don’t allow this condition it might not look so nice in a few years time.” Cllr Colin Cassidy (SNP) said: “In this day and age businesses need as many things as possible to bring in revenue.” Cllr Jim Muirhead (Lab) added: “I’m struggling to think of any restaurants in our area that don’t add to potential incomes with deliveries.”

The Abbey Granary application was made by Mr Akram Mohammed of KAINAM Ltd.
