Clamp down on council publications

The UK Government’s guidelines state that council publications should not be published more frequently than quarterly.

The Scottish Government has no plans to introduce similar legislation in Scotland, however the Newspaper Society is calling for action to be taken: “Council newspapers which compete aggressively with local newspapers for readers and advertising revenues pose a worrying threat to democracy at a local level and should be banned. The Government has restated its commitment to clamping down on council papers in England and the NS would be supportive of any measures aimed at achieving the same objective in other parts of the UK.”
