Seven of Midlothian’s leading galas and festivals are demanding the council reconsiders its grants process following funding cuts.

In an open letter to councillors and senior officials, the organising committees claim that the community celebrations have taken a bigger hit than other voluntary groups.

The letter adds: “We calculate that grants to galas and similar community events for 2015 have been reduced overall by approximately 48 per cent from the sums awarded in the current financial year.”

A council spokesman said: “We understand some groups are very disappointed at cuts in funding. We’re confident, however, this was a robust, objective process designed to make sure every community group started on a level playing field and each had an equal chance in securing funding.”
