Concerns have been raised in Mayfield about delays to work on the replacement Newbattle High School.

Construction – initially scheduled to begin in March 2015 – may not take place until into 2016, as a result of the Office of National Statistics (ONS) scrutinising new EU accounting requirements regarding hub projects such as the Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) programmes, of which Newbattle is one.

Referring to the front page of the October 1 edition of the Advertiser, Robert Hogg, chairman of Mayfield and Easthouses Community Council said: “They are blaming Europe and they are blaming the Scottish Office. It’s tit for tat. It’s disappointing for the communities.

“My biggest worry is that the costs go up and up and it wont get built. There might have to be a compromise to cut back on the figures. Hopefully there is some good new before the end of the year.”
