Council unveils Penicuik homeless plan

Midlothian Council has plans to convert a residential care home into a unit for homeless people.

The local authority is in the process of purchasing 1a Eastfield Drive, Penicuik – pictured – from St Joseph’s Service.

Explaining the plans to Penicuik and District Community Council, the council described it as a “spend to save” initiative. A planning application has been lodged for the change of use. A house in multiple occupation licence will also be sought.

Kevin Anderson, head of housing and community safety, said consent was being sought to create eight bedspaces – two twin rooms and six single rooms – within the house.
