A man has been charged with murder following the death of a Bonnyrigg man.

Robert Kay (36), appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday.

He made no plea or declaration and the case was continued for further inquiry.

Kay was remanded in custody.

The court appearance followed the death of Carlo Volante following an alleged disturbance at an address in Auld Coal Grove at around 4pm on Tuesday, January 3.

It is understood that Mr Volante was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where he passed away later that day.

A local community leader summed up feeling in the town following the incident.

Bonnyrigg and Lasswade Community Council chairman Darius Namdaran said there was overriding sadness

“That took over any kind of feelings of shock,” Mr Namdaran.

“It’s one of those things that has just come out of the blue and filled us with sadness, particularly with it being at New Year when we are looking forward with a positive attitude to the year ahead.”

He added: “Our thoughts are with the family at this time and condolences to them.

“It’s so sad that this has happened in the town.”
