Crisis talks on the future of bus services in Midlothian were due to take place yesterday.
Council officials were set to meet transport operators Lothian Buses and Edinburgh Coach Lines in a bid to secure services which operator First Scotland East plans to axe in June.
The talks were arranged following last week’s shock announcement by First that it intended to close its depot in Dalkeith and withdraw all but three county services.
In East Lothian, where First Scotland East services are also being axed, the council is considering setting up a state-run company to serve isolated villages.
Speaking to the Advertiser this week, Derek Milligan, leader of Midlothian Council, ruled out any similar move by his local authority.
