The chips will soon be down at a Dalkeith primary school, where spudding gardeners are hoping to mash the competition in a national contest.

P5/6 youngsters at St David’s are taking part in this year’s ‘grow your own potato’ competition.

Run in conjunction with the Potato Council and Royal Highland Education Trust, the project has taught them how to plant potatoes and they will be shown how to harvest them when the time comes.

This year’s national prize is a Marmax Junior Octobrunch Rainbow bench for the heaviest crop of Rocket potatoes and seven regional prizes of Junior Rainbow Sturdy benches for the heaviest regional variety.
