Scotland’s first Solar Meadow has been switched on at a college campus in Dalkeith.
Comprising 2,560 solar panels, the £1.2 million project will enable the Edinburgh College campus at Dalhousie Road to meet its electricity needs and reduce its annual carbon emissions by 300,000 kg.
Spread across a five-acre site, the meadow will act as a research centre, focusing on the interaction between biodiversity and solar technology and analysing the effect of environmental conditions such as weather, pollen and dust on the output of the panels.
After attending the official opening, Councillor Ian Baxter (Green) said: “Having Scotland’s first ever Solar Meadow right here in Midlothian is fantastic.
“We need to see a much greater mix of renewable technologies in Scotland and this research facility puts Midlothian at the forefront of developing the skills needed.”
