YOUNG people in Midlothian are gaining a greater understanding of historic building maintenance.

Twelve pupils from St David’s RC High School completed an exciting hands-on training course organised by Dalkeith Townscape Heritage Initiative and Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme and Edinburgh’s Telford College.

The students undertook a five-week day release training course, tackling traditional building craft skills such as plaster moulding, marbling and graining and carving stone.

They also visited historic buildings to gain an understanding of how they were constructed, what materials were used and the care which the structures will require in future years.
