Newtongrange Star duly avenged their early season home 1-0 defeat to the Burgh with a hard fought victory at Olivebank on Saturday.
This local derby saw a blistering start from the Star scoring in their very first attack, via a stunning 20 yard shot from Craig Thomson following build up work from Kris Renton and Kevin Motion.
The hosts were clearly rattled as Nitten next saw an excellent effort from Renton superbly blocked by Burgh keeper John Dodds.
A great run by David Morris saw his parting effort beat Dodds but the ball trundled inches past the post.
It was nearly 1-1 when a Kevin McLeish corner was headed in by Scott Gibson only to be cleared off the Star goalline by Gary Cherrie.
In 20 minutes a glancing header from ex-Star’s Sean Jamieson only just went wide as Burgh improved.
But in 25 minutes Stevie Thomson limped off injured to be substituted by Kyle Scott for the hosts.
A Jack Wilson effort next was well taken by Dodds approaching the half hour mark before a Jamieson shot went too straight at Star keeper Renton who produced a double save, firstly denying a Gibson header, then another effort from Jamieson as Burgh chased the equaliser.
Just before the break Star saw Stephen Tulloch put the ball in the Burgh net but was ruled offside, before another Renton shot was again well saved by Dodds.
But just two minutes into the second half Musselburgh grabbed the equaliser with a deflected Jed Davies shot.
At the other end Lee Currie crashed to the ground in the penalty area but was booked for diving, before a one on one attack saw an excellent blocking save by Dodds deny Kris Renton.
Star skipper Blair Tolmie was booked in 56 minutes for a jersey pull back on Paliczka before a Kevin McLeish’s free kick at the other end was superbly saved by Kieron Renton. More chances for Kris Renton and Cropley failed to break the deadlock.
The Star winner however eventually came in 78 minutes when Renton controlled the ball well following a pass from sub Michael Deland before turning and shooting home past Dodds for a fine winner.
This coming Saturday Newtongrange Star will be at home to Hill o’ Beath in the Super League.
