A Newtongrange man sought advice from two famous Scottish authors when writing his debut book about his upbringing in Edinburgh.

Jim Devine’s book The Lost Tornado was released late last year. The 56-year-old said: “It’s been doing exceptionally well. Olly Murs released a book the same day and we were neck and neck on five star reviews on Amazon, then I took over.

“I had help from Tony Black and Irvine Welsh (pictured with Jim). Irvine has given me some good advice. I met him at a Hibs game in Sweden a few years back. He is inspirational. We grew up about one or two miles apart in Pilton. This is the first book I have ever written. I would say 95 per cent of it is true. I’m writing the follow-up now.”
